If you’re new to the world of sex toys, you may be wondering if they’re safe.  Vibrators are like any other small appliance, they’re completely safe if used according to the instructions and if you follow the tips we gave you in our Vibrator Tips article.

Common Sense Prevents Risk

Use common sense with your vibrator.  If you have an electric sex toy, use the same precautions you would with any other household appliance.  Keep them away from water.  Any external wires should not be frayed.  Never handle the toy by the cord and do not pull or yank on the cord.  Battery-operated sex toys should never be immersed in water unless they are designed to be waterproof.

With regard to any injuries, again common sense will keep you out of trouble.  Never force the insertion of a vibrator into your vagina or anus.  And, never insert the vibrator completely!  You certainly don’t want to have any problems removing it.

Don’t Over Do It

Just like anything you do, overdoing can cause injuries.  The genitals and the surrounding skin are sensitive.  Persistent or prolonged stimulation and the resulting friction can cause irritation.  If you find that using your vibrator frequently is causing any sensitivity, stop using it for a while.  You can go back to using it once the sensitivity goes away.

Try one of our water-based or silicone-based lubricants to make sex toy use even more enjoyable.  Choose the right one for your vibrator.  Refer to our Vibrator Tips article.

If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis in your hands or wrists, we would advise you to purchase a vibrator with a longer, more ergonomic handle.

Keep It Clean

You may be wondering if using a vibrator or sex toy can cause you to get an infection.  If you follow the cleaning tips we gave you in our Vibrator Tips article, you will have no problems.  Bacterial and yeast infections are totally preventable.  Clean your vibrator thoroughly after every use.   Check our line of sex toy cleaners and use the one recommended for your type of vibrator.

Never use the vibrator in your anus and then use it in your vagina until you clean it properly!  Even if you only move the vibrator on the area surrounding the anus without inserting it, you still need to clean the toy before using it in your vagina.

If you’re worried about remembering to clean your vibrator after using it, then we would suggest that you cover it with a condom each time you use it.  It will prolong the life of your sex toy and it is an easy solution.  We have a full line of condoms to choose from.

 Sharing Sex Toys

Remember if you use someone else’s sex toy, be sure to thoroughly clean and disinfect it first or cover it with a condom to avoid transmitting bacteria or STD’s.  Ideally, we would suggest that you do not use someone else’s vibrator.  If you are sharing a vibrator with a partner, common sense once again comes into play.  You should either clean the sex toy between uses on each partner or cover it with a condom and change the condom before using it on the other person.

There is no more risk to using a vibrator than there is using a toaster or a hair dryer – providing you are sensible and exercise common sense!
