The 3 D rings can actually be moved a little between each group of studs which gives a little more versatility and the size of the rings allows for ropes or chains to be threaded through them. The studs themselves go right through the leather but a thick padding on the inside of the collar protects your neck and makes the collar feel nice and comfortable.
